INTERVIEW: Hybrid Sheep
INTERVIEW: Hybrid Sheep
Arnaud from Hybrid Sheep, French modern death metal band, has answered some of our questions regarding their newest album Free From the Clutches of God , released in the late 2014. With a lot of attention publicly and as SOUNDSCAPE MAGAZINE puts it ‘Free From The Clutches Of God is a great listen and if you like your music hard-hitting and succinct, Hybrid Sheep will be right up your street’, there is a lot to expect from this quintet in the nearest future for sure! Check out what they have to say below.
What does your new debut album Free From the Clutches of God reflect about you?
It reflects the music that we like, a mix of melodic and brutal sounds put together. We waited 5 years before deciding to put out a full album, but we finally got to a point where, we knew exactly what we wanted to do musically and we were also ready financially to do this project. Looking back, there isn’t much we would change on the album so it was just as well that we waited.
What is your favorite track off the new release and why?
We all have our own favorite songs, but “A Man Chooses…A Slave Obeys” is probably the stand-out song for us, as we had never played it together at practice before recording it, so we didn’t know how it would turn out. The lyrics weren’t put together until we arrived in the studio. In the end we’re really happy with how it sounds.
Can you talk more about the songwriting and recording process?
We start with the riffs that the guitarists come up with, then added some basic bass chords and drums. Next we work with the bassist and the drummer to make their parts better and the structure of the song can also change. Once we have the song down and we can listen to it, we add the lyrics.
Who would you say is your biggest influence?
We wouldn’t be able to name just one band as an example. Benighted, Gojira and Aborted come to mind. We have seen them play live several times and on a few occasions, we had a chance to talk to them briefly and they are really nice guys in addition to being great musicians. They set a good example and we would love to share the stage with them.
What aspect of being a musician / your career excites you the most?
Writing songs and presenting them to the public is very exciting. We like everything about being in a band and we take great pleasure in it too. We enjoy practicing together and it’s always a good excuse to have a few drinks.
What colour describes your music?
I don’t know what color exactly, but I think it’s a dark color.
What artists do you want to be featured on your album (the next one)?
Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God), Michael Amott (Arch Enemy), Chris Storey (ex. All Shall Perish) and Alex Vazquez (Abiotic). Any one of those guys would be great.
Where are you happiest — on the stage or in the studio?
Being on stage is the best, but being in the studio is also very good. It’s very gratifying to write songs and then to see the crowd go crazy when you play them live.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully in 10 years, we will have released our fourth or fifth album, we will have put on a few extra kilos in weight, but we’ll still be jamming.
What releases do you recommend for people to listen to that came out in 2014? Which ones are your favourite?
Die Without Hope by Carnifex, Phenomena by Within the Ruins and Necrotic Manifesto by Aborted were stuck in our car stereos for a very long time, but the one we have listened to the most in our van is the album by Casseurs Flowteurs!
What would you change about the music industry?
The music industry has been changing by itself for some years now. Thanks to the internet we can listen to underground bands from all over the world and these bands don’t really need the music industry to be heard.
Final question, who is your favourite person to follow on twitter/instagram and why?
We just signed up to Twitter so we’re still trying to understand how it works. Help Us! (@hybridsheep). We’re probably not quite ready for Instagram yet but who knows, maybe sometime soon.
Is there anything you want to add?
We would like to thank everyone who supports us, and a special big kiss to Olivier and Randy (Tenacity Music) for their help. We hope 2015 will be a good year filled with great metal concerts!
