This is a proof that Pivnich are one of Ukraine’s best new indie-folk bands. Not intrigued yet? Listen to some of their songs below…
What can be more captivating than lyrics in another language and self-recorded music, featuring UKULELE!
How did the band come about?
It all started as a duo of Andrew (guitar) & his wife Anastasia (ukulele). Few months later the other members joined PIVNICH for the Pull&Bear music contest. Eventually, we’ve won the contest and began performing as a band.
What was a defining moment that made you pursue career in music, especially folk genre?
It wasn’t our first music project and most of us have played in other bands before. Still it was our first experience in indie-folk genre. We love it as it gives a lot of freedom. You can mix ukulele, harp and piano with guitar riffs and make it all sound very unique.
Congratulations on the new single! Sounds awesome! What message is it trying to convey?
Thanks a lot! Well, that’s a story about a stranger who got lost in the woods. Fantastic creatures lead him deep into the forest and he’s trying to find his way home. He promises his beloved one that one day he’ll turn into a white bird and sing a love song for her so she’ll know that he’ll be near forever. That’s a common type of folklore stories about evil spirits and haunted forests.
What colour describes your music?
Blue & White. Though our last single was very green, I guess.
If you only had one word to describe/ sell your music to someone, what would it be?
Should we expect a new EP/album any time soon?
Yep! We’re working really hard and the new EP is on it’s way! We’ll record an additional version of the EP in English too. There’ll be lots of mysteries, ghosts, weird creatures and even more weird love.
What is your favorite track to play live and why?
Our new song, which is about a mermaid falling in love with a sailor. It’s slow and kind of hypnotic unlike most of our songs, which are so much faster.
Can you talk more about the songwriting and recording process?
We do everything at home. Every song is recorded in our living room, which is transformed into a small music studio. Andrew writes songs and his wife Anastasia deals with the lyrics.
Who would you say is your biggest influence?
Fleet Foxes, Florence + The Machine, Of Monsters And Men, Radiohead and The Beatles
What artists do you want to collaborate with in the future?
Florence Welch is so adorable! We would love to do something together. Playing with OMAM would be a great experience too.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Can’t tell for sure yet, but it would be so great to perform our music around the world.
Best piece of advice you have ever gotten?
“It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices.”
