INTERVIEW: Beach Weather

Beach Weather, a new band formed by Nick Santino (previous Rocket To The Moon), played their first time in the UK supporting This Wild Life, As It Is, and Sleeping With Sirens. Below are few questions that Nick has answered for Good4Ears to help us get to know the band a little bit more! They have released an EP WHAT A DRAG earlier this year, however, we know that there is more to expect from them in the near future. And it will be breathtaking.

The band came together last year when I had the idea to start something new.  I had a few guys in mind that I’ve played with in previous musical related things and asked them to I be a part of it with me.

What is the idea behind the title of ‘What A Drag’? What message is EP trying to convey?
What A Drag is a lyric in the song New Skin from the EP. I had What A Drag written in an iPhone note for a while and wanted to use it in a song.  I came up with the idea for the melting Popsicle artwork before we had a name for the EP and I thought that What A Drag fit nicely with the artwork.

First time playing in the UK! What is your usual routine when playing abroad/something to look out for?
Well since this is our first time we were hoping to be able to see a lot of the country.  Unfortunately we’ve seen more of the inside of our van and the inside of hotel rooms than we’ve seen landmarks! But there’s always next time.  It’s been an amazing experience over here playing music for all these people in a country as beautiful as this one. We we’d love to come back and do it again soon.

If you only had one word to describe/ sell your music to someone, what would it be?
Passionate

Can you talk more about the songwriting and recording process?
The writing process for Beach Weather is different than how I’ve written in the past. It’s a lot of voice memos. Melodies is the shower. Lyrics in the middle of the night written into my phone. Little loops and beats made on a laptop and played back over and over again.  We recorded the EP in a friends bedroom. Plan on doing that again for the next one. Feels real and not forced that way.

Who would you say is your biggest influence?
For me it’s gotta be Tom Petty. He’s my all time favorite musician. But not music related it would have to be my parents. They keep me going at this just as much as Petty does.

What artists do you want to collaborate with in the future?
Anyone really! It would be cool to play some music with guys like Mute Math or the 1975. Or Tom Petty or the Eagles. I’m into everything.

Best piece of advice you have ever gotten?
Not to worry about what other people are doing.  It’s your art. Your passion. Put all your focus on what makes you happy and create something special. You can’t be them because they already are. Be yourself. Be unique. Be everlasting.
