INTERVIEW: Kill My Coquette

Getting deep on the first question huh? Hmm.. I think it tells part of my story. Love, loss, struggle, hope, yearning, adventure, decay, beauty.

What is your favorite track off the new release and why?

I'm loving "Festival Boy" the more I play it. It started as an idea I had after an actual experience from the Coachella music festival. That magical moment frozen in time when anything is possible, everything is new. This moment. Now... What if? Pink sunsets. The show is over. Go home. I realized I should write about it.

Can you talk more about the songwriting and recording process?

Everything I do is governed by my mood and by emotion. That is where it starts for me. I'll explore that with my guitar. Find a riff to jump off from. Sometimes I just like a phrase I've heard, or a passage from a book I've read. I'll take that idea and explore it, write freely about it…then go back and find something poignant and start with structuring it into a song.

Who would you say is your biggest influence?

Joan of Arc.

What aspect of being a musician / your career excites you the most?

The danger. The unpredictability. The moxie it takes musicians to truly express themselves. That excites me.

What colour describes your music?

Garnet.

What artists do you want to be featured on your album (the next one)?

Iggy Pop, Dave Grohl, Jack White, Joan Jett, David Johansen, Brody Dalle.

Where are you happiest — on the stage or in the studio?

The stage.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

On a ranch riding a horse.

What releases do you recommend for people to listen to that came out in 2014? Which ones are your favourite?

Lazaretto by Jack White is killer. Love the tone. The guitars on that track rip your ears off. "Im Shakin" is catchy as fuck. Brody Dalle's solo album Diploid Love is also great. Her talent is immeasurable and anything she does is going to be solid, but solo albums can be iffy. This one holds up. The lyrics and catchy hooks are contagious. She is in her true form: unapologetic, melodic and to the point. I like Weezer's new album too: Everything Will Be Alright In the End.

What would you change about the music industry?

Everything.

Final question, who is your favourite person to follow on twitter/instagram and why?

I'm not cool enough to have a favorite. Can I follow you?

Is there anything you want to add?

Support music by paying for it. If you enjoyed it, if it affected you, if it made you stop and think, give back. Realize that the artists that did that for you have to make a living too. Don't let radio govern your tastes either, unless its Rodney On The Roq at KROQ. Support local musicians that are killing it and then tell your friends.
