As mentioned by mazurpr, ‘TORONTO - Braden Barrie will take his SayWeCanFly project across the pond for several acoustic promotional live dates in the UK in the new year’, and Good4Ears has a pretty good feeling about this…The upcoming release of Between The Roses, which is available to pre-order on iTunes, is definitely a must to have on your iPhones. Although, it is always best to hear those songs being played live, right? Why not come and see 20-year-old Toronto native taking full control of his acoustic guitar (hhmm, the accent might also be a plus)! Check out what Braden had to say about his debuting acoustic UK Tour as well as his favourite tracks of 2014!
What does your new album reflect about you?
Between The Roses tells the story of how love has played its part in my life. It tells about how it has made me stronger, and also broken me in many ways.
What is your favorite track off the new album and why?
My favourite track off of the new album is definitely "Between The Roses" which is the closing song. With this song I feel that I told more of a story than I have ever been able to capture before while writing. Lyrically I am happier with it than anything I have created before. I have always been fascinated by the story of Romeo & Juliet and I wanted to write about how I have experienced similar feelings to the characters of that story in my own life.
Can you talk more about the songwriting and recording process?
For me, the song writing process is something almost beyond my understanding. It's a matter of being in the right headspace and simply allowing creative energy to flow. Personally I like to sit in a dimly lit room with a salt lamp and turn off all of my electronics, and get out a physical pen and paper. I know the songs don't come from me and that I am just an outlet for the words and melodies, so I always try to get myself as relaxed as possible and open myself up to that amazing energy.
Who would you say is your biggest influence?
At the moment, I really look up to Ed Sheeran because he does so much with such a simple setup. I admire his independence and that he always stays humble. You can always tell when someone truly loves what they are doing simply because they have the opportunity to do it.
What aspect of your career excites you the most?
The most exciting thing about doing what I do is knowing there is always room for growth. There is no getting comfortable in one spot because there are always opportunities to make things bigger and better. I love meeting so many amazing people through those opportunities and gaining new perspectives on the world.
What colour describes your music?
I like to think my music could be captured with a good mix of crimson red & black. The colour wouldn't be intriguing if there wasn't darkness beneath it allowing it to stand out and be something meaningful.
What artists do you want to be featured on your album (the next one)?
I'd love to do a track with Lights.
Where are you happiest — on the stage or in the studio?
They are definitely two different worlds. I think I find equal happiness in both for different reasons. The studio is the canvas where I get to create the art that brings me to the stage, and the stage is the place where my heart connects with the hearts of all the beautiful people who care about the art I made in the studio.
Looking back at your career, what would you have done differently?
I believe everything happens as it is meant to happen. I believe all of our lives have some sort of purpose and every decision we make has a small impact on something greater that we cannot truly understand. I don't think anyone should ever have regrets, only learn how to do things better next time around. I do kind of wish I had spent a little more time on MySpace while it was still kicking around.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I'd love to be doing exactly what I'm doing now which is waking up every day and spending time on my music. I definitely want to have my own house & studio so that I can make music all the time instead of waiting until I'm ready to record my next album. As long as I can still do what I love everyday, I'll be happy.
What releases do you recommend for people to listen to that came out in 2014? Which ones are your favourite?
There were so many good songs and album released in 2014. Since I'm going to the UK soon, I'm going to recommend the album "Ghost" by Kate Rusby. I heard it on the radio while I was driving one night and fell in love. It makes me feel like a Hobbit in The Shire.
What would you change about the music industry?
I always hope someday all artists will realize how much they can do on their own. Record labels are awesome, but there are so many ways to reach your followers on a personal level, and to me that is the most valuable thing any artist or band could do. The biggest force any musician has on their side is the love they receive from their listeners.
Final question, who is your favourite person to follow on twitter/instagram and why?
One of my favourite accounts on Instagram is that of Norman Reedus who plays Daryl in The Walking Dead. He takes selfies on set and also posted a video at a BlessTheFall concert once which I thought was super cool. I just love when celebrities are down to earth and care enough to share a personal journey with their fans.
Is there anything you want to add?
I'm incredibly excited for this year, and I hope that everyone enjoys my new album. Between The Roses is a huge piece of who I am, and it makes me happy knowing I can trust my followers enough to show them my pain and allow myself to become emotionally vulnerable knowing what I write means something to them. I appreciate the support from everyone, and I can't wait to see many of you on the road. Stay cozy, and have a wonderful year!
